A musician and active community member, Mary Kelly has an MA in Community Music and is founder of Music Space in Yellowknife, NT, Canada. She uses her voice, guitar, piano and drumming to lead workshops. With a Grade 8 Royal Conservatory of Music in piano she has also trained in the following areas: voice technique, songwriting and composition, choral singing, djembe, balafon, jazz piano, organ, conducting, transcription and aural skills. She has specialized training from Music Together for early childhood music programming and from the Gordon Institute for Music Learning for elementary general music education.
When facilitating small groups and classes Mary’s leadership style is animated, gentle and open. She is skilled at explaining complex terms in simple language and has a multitude of creative tools and resources. Mary has assisted many individuals experiencing physical and intellectual disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, deafness, blindness, Retts Syndrome and Brain Injury. With whomever she is working, Mary is patient, adaptable, and invested in the positive experience of others.
Since 2007, Mary has been actively involved as a musician and volunteer in the community with the following groups: Yellowknife Choral Society, Classics on Stage Yellowknife, Baker Singers Choir, Literacy Outreach Centre, Yellowknife Community Gardens, Yellowknife Women’s Society and the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre. In her previous career, Mary traveled to several remote communities of the NT and NU as a water scientist and enjoyed collaborating with local personnel in these communities.
